The NEVEK Project of the BEATE KLARSFELD FOUNDATION
The NEVEK project was inaugurated in 1988, assisted by the Association for Research of the Hungarian Speaking Jewry founded in Israel ( called in Hungarian Szol a Kakas mar) and by the Beate Klarsfeld Foundation (New York). In 1992 the Klarsfeld Foundation became the sole promoter of the project.
The aim of the project is the computerization of personal data of the persecuted Hungarian Jews in the Holocaust period based only on original historical documents of the wartime, such as
- Deportations lists drawn up by the Hungarian Royal Gendarmerie in April,1944; personal cards of the Hungarian Ministry of Defense dealing with Jews drafted to labor battalions; lists used by other ministries and local administration, such as those leading to the confiscation of Jewish property ; food ration cards for Jews ; lists of internment camps held by the Hungarian Police , lists of ghettoes , lists of the Jewish Houses in Budapest ,etc;
-
Lists and personal cards of concentration camps controlled by the Germans .
To date we have accomplished the following objectives:
-
Deportations from the counties: Hajdu County, Zala County, Bekes County )
- Internment camps in Hungary: Sarvar, Kistarcsa (not published)
- Labor battalions: Labor battalions detached to the Eastern Front
- Concentration camps: Stutthof , Strasshof (Austria, incomplete list, to date unpublished), Lichtenwoerth (Austria, un published)
In 2002 we began to prepare the deportation lists of Somogy, Szolnok, Vas and Sopron counties. Concurrently we began to classify the nominal cards of the Mauthausen camp complex.
In order to amplify data we crosscheck and apply data of survivors when some important detail is missing (name of mother, birth place/date), relying on official sources as well (national and international Jewish organizations,etc.)
The project functions under the auspices of the Beate Klarsfeld Foundation. Serge Klarsfeld is the pioneer of collecting and publishing of personal data of the Holocaust. The NEVEK project is directed by Dr. Gavriel Bar-Shaked. The computerization is based on a MAGIC program, applied for this purpose by Gyorgy Hajnal, Itzik Levitt, now reorganized and developed by Josef Stern. The scientific assistants are Mizzi and Monika Herbst.
Entering the site the visitor receives the first form containing two questions: family name and first name. Without filling a family name it will be impossible to query further. The visitor who does not know first name/s, may look only for family name/s getting of course a wide variety. This data base session contains all cross- references, the names of the persecuted together with his parents, children or relatives. Here the visitor may provide a broader kinship net. After checking names seeming familiar it in advisable to enter the next form containing six questions. The answer here will be concentrated on the victim himself.

We prepared a special search tool for the labor battalions sent to the Ukraine (under development). In this form you may move freely, and if you find the proper number of the labor battalion, by clicking on (+) you may see the actualroute of the battalion. This special tool was created by Josef Stern, and is very useful for applications for compensations.
